Scion VP Mark Templin claims that his company is more in touch with its buyers than any other brand, and what xB owners wanted even more than another Toyota-sponsored group hug (or Second Life virtual conference) was a larger vehicle. The 2008 xB addresses this request with a foot more overall length and three more inches of width, while an inch decrease in height yields somewhat more traditional proportions.
With the expanded sheetmetal comes an upgrade in components under the skin, starting with a 158-hp, 2.4L DOHC inline-four. Under the larger standard 16-inch wheels lie a set of disc brakes that are a touch smaller than 11-inch, and anti-lock, stability control, and traction control are standard. Inside, the cargo area grows by nearly 40%, and a storage area is provided underneath the rear seats for laptops, cameras, and various other consumer paraphernalia. The still center-mounted gauge cluster includes what Scion refers to as a "combination meter", which offers up various information related to fuel economy and outside air temps, the Pioneer sound system offers up an iPod interface, and the driver now gets a spot to set his or her right arm.

Also shown here in Chicago was a customized concept, wearing a variety of parts bearing the TRD logo such as drilled brakes with painted calipers, 19" wheels, and color-matched interior panels. Expect most of this equipment to be available as dealer-installed options, and we were told that a body kit - designed by Five Axis- will soon follow.
Will the Xbox sell as well with its new, not-so-boxy shape? We think that the vast increase in interior space and much-improved hardware will make up for any of the charm that's been lost during the transition to its new shape.

PRESS RELEASE:
Scion Launches All-New 2008 xB At 2007 Chicago Auto Show
Related Media
February 8, 2007 – Chicago - Scion, from Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., unveiled the all-new 2008 xB urban utility vehicle at a press conference today at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show. The xB was first introduced in early 2003 for the 2004 model year and its boxy shape became iconic to the Scion brand.
"No one in the automotive industry is as hard-wire-connected to its owners as is Scion, and the 2008 xB is a perfect example," said Mark Templin, Scion vice president. "We've stated in the past that we'll probably always have a box in the Scion lineup, but our owners told us they wanted a bigger box. They talk, we listen and we responded with a bigger and better xB."
Distinct Scion Style
Like the previous generation xB, the all-new 2008 model was styled with distinctiveness in mind. This aggressive new compact applies design elements from the t2B concept vehicle that was shown at the 2005 New York International Auto Show. These exterior styling cues include the soft angles between its wide and flat paneling, high beltline, elongated headlamps that wrap around the side of the vehicle, inset taillights, rectangular grille, pronounced fenders, and single rear backup light on the left bumper. The xB also features tinted rear windows, and turn signals integrated into the side mirrors.
Larger Chassis for a Smooth Ride
Scion customers love to drive, so with that in mind, the overall size was enlarged, helping to create a more exciting driving experience. Engineers increased the wheelbase by four inches, the overall length by a foot, the overall width by almost three inches and decreased overall height more than an inch to give the xB a more comfortable ride.
The xB also receives 16-inch steel wheels, an inch larger than the previous generation. Customers will be able to choose from three all-new standard wheel covers which, will also be shared with the all-new xD. The xB also stops with larger brakes thanks to the 10.83-inch ventilated discs in the front and 10.98-inch disc brakes in the rear which are more than two inches bigger than the previous generation.
In addition to the wider wheelbase, the xB's smooth ride can be attributed to its McPherson strut front and rear torsion beam suspension.
Interior Comfort and Design
The xB's design team aimed for a lounge-like interior that met the comfort and lifestyle needs of the customer. The versatile interior provides 29.1 cubic feet of cargo area behind the rear seats, an increase of nearly eight cubic feet from the previous generation xB. For added convenience, the 60/40 split rear seats fold flat, providing a spacious and flat cargo floor, allowing the driver to haul larger loads more easily. In addition, the front seats fully recline for increased cargo space or relaxation.
Interior storage is abundant with a driver's convenience tray, a glove box, a console box and front door storage. A fixed tray is located beneath the rear seats for hidden storage and can accommodate small items like magazines, cameras, laptops, cell phone chargers and CDs.
A series of sleek circular gauges, including a combination meter, are centered on the dash. The combination meter allows drivers to toggle through the clock, outside temperature, instantaneous MPG, average MPG, distance to empty, or the average speed. Upon starting the engine, "xB" flashes on the combination meter before information is displayed. The deep orange display gauges allow for better visibility day and night. Metal-tone trim accents the dash and surrounds the shifter which is mounted on the lower dash. A driver's right armrest was added for comfort.
Upgraded Audio System
The xB's standard 160-watt maximum output Pioneer audio system is focused on youth lifestyle as it features iPod connectivity and a mini-jack port. This standard head unit integrates track, artist and album information from the iPod into a one-line display on the head unit's screen. Connectivity is achieved by simply plugging the iPod into a port via a connector cable, providing outstanding sound quality through the car's stereo system and constant power to the iPod. Music is controlled through the head unit and the steering wheel audio control buttons. The mini-jack port allows users to listen to their portable music collection through the xB's Pioneer speakers.
Since many Scion customers add in-car entertainment systems to their vehicle, the xB now comes standard with rear head unit outputs, allowing for additional external amps to boost power to the front and rear speakers, and subwoofers.
The xB's optional premium audio system adds one more feature to the standard head unit, the ability to download "skins" to play on the LCD faceplate. Customers can download images, four-second video clips and eight-second movies from Pioneer's website. In addition, Pioneer software allows customers to burn their own images and movies onto a CD and upload them onto the available head unit.
Both the standard and premium head units retain key Scion audio system features such as Scion Sound Processing (SSP) where listeners can choose from three pre-set equalizer settings, satellite radio compatibility, a user-customizable welcome screen, MP3 and WMA capability, Automatic Sound Leveling (ASL) and Sound Retouch Technology (SRT), which provides clearer CD sound quality. Both systems feature six speakers: two tweeters and speakers in each door panel.
More Performance
More powerful than its predecessor, the all-new xB is equipped with a 2.4 L dual overhead-cam four-cylinder engine with Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), the same engine found on the tC. The engine produces 158 horsepower, 55 more than the previous generation. Customers will have a choice of either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic with sequential shifting, a first for automatic four-speeds in the Scion or Toyota line-up.
Standard Features
Like all Scion vehicles, the xB is mono spec. Customers only need to choose exterior color and transmission type. The xB comes with generous and upscale standard features including power steering, windows, door locks and mirrors; remote keyless entry; air conditioning; four-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA); driver and front passenger dual stage airbags; front seat-mounted side airbags; front and rear side curtain airbags; Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with Traction Control (TRAC); first-aid kit; and tilt steering wheel with audio controls. All Scion models come with complimentary factory-recommended maintenance services at the first 5,000 mile and 10,000 mile intervals, to be performed by an authorized Scion or Toyota dealership.
Colors
The exterior color palette for the new xB includes Super White, Classic Silver Metallic, Black Sand Pearl, Nautical Blue Metallic, Blackberry Crush Metallic and Hypnotic Teal Mica. All xBs will feature high-quality dark charcoal interior fabric.
Warranty
All Scion models feature a 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle limited warranty that applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and corrosion with no mileage limitation.

Awesome... it's going to be very popular. Only that would keep me away.
aaron @ Feb 8th 2007 12:10PM
too bad its getting bigger...but that's the industry trend -> Make them bigger. exterior is pretty cool. i am sure it will look good in person. but that interior is really really shitty and looks very cheap.
Brent Schmidt @ Feb 8th 2007 12:14PM
Toyota ain't keepin' it real...
But seriously. Fugly? Yes... that interior is god-awful and a pain to look at. These new shots have definately convinced me to stay with my first gen xB.
Lithous @ Feb 8th 2007 12:18PM
I like how the Japanese always know what we Americans want. Their vehicles are getting bigger and it isn't like they had small cars when my parents had 5 kids and now have bigger and bigger vehicles now that I have significantly less kids (i.e. members to haul around). They are just wizards. Painted interior pieces really show they know Americans and how we appreciate real beauty (i.e. that is so beautiful in this and the FJ). They like, read our minds. And any domestic fanboys that try to point out that the Japanese only *happen* to build small cars anyway at the time when there was a gas crisis in the U.S., you are wrong, they planned it all, like wizardry.

same color and configuration of the load i dropped in the camode this morning.
fawgcutter @ Feb 8th 2007 12:22PM
Just my opinion: making it larger with those reduced visibility C-pillars is a turn-off for me.
The original xB was a pinnacle in great minimalist design - simple and clean without looking too cheap (think pre-BMW Minis).
Tim @ Feb 8th 2007 12:28PM
Overall I like the design. Preproduction interior is laughable. It looks like everything is held together with Elmer's glue. This car will kill the sales of the xD. Why not make a 5-door hatch sedan like the euro market avensis instead of 2 similar cars. The Avensis sedan at about 20,000 could bring the brand upscale.
joshj @ Feb 8th 2007 12:30PM
xd, xb, what about a tc redo? :)
Jim @ Feb 8th 2007 12:32PM
Good comparison with the Mini. The new MINI may be a good car, and have started it's own trend, but if you've ever driven a real Mini, you know a MINI is nothing like the original. Same for the new xB. Maybe more practical, nicer, more comfortable, but none of the charm of the original.
Wonder if the local dealer still has any real xB's in stock. Bet they sell out quick now that people have seen what's coming...
vectorbug @ Feb 8th 2007 12:38PM
ugh this is going to look so dated in 5-10 years. What a waste of material.
jimbobjoe @ Feb 8th 2007 12:43PM
still a POS
Daffy Duck @ Feb 8th 2007 12:50PM
The guage cluster in the center just leaves a big hole where all the guages should actually be. I don't want to be driving a WWII fighter plane when I am in a small econobox. It just seems that it is not pulled off as well as it is done in the Mini, which just looks more natural and less like an aftermarket add on. Although, I am sure that is what they were going for with this application.
FerrariF430 @ Feb 8th 2007 1:07PM
I wish they would release a price and 0-60-1/4 mile times. Just to make sure they dint make they car to heavy.
Owen @ Feb 8th 2007 1:16PM
I like the lines better, but why the heck did they make it bigger, I don't ever recall saying that the xB was too small, actually I remember thinking it was a good size, I only remember thinking, man that thing is unaerodynamic, I'de rather have the xA and get 5 mpg more, that must be why they don't offer stability control on the xA, to level the playing field. Larger is NOT better. I'll bet the mileage numbers go down drastically for the redesign. Another reason why I think they had as many buyers as they did.
PJ @ Feb 8th 2007 1:36PM
I was pretty disappointed when I saw C&D's leaked pics of this vehicle yesterday. But it's grown on me a little, especially now that I've seen it on the TRD suspension and 18" wheels. Nice stance.
The 2.4 is a great match for this sort of car. Relatively big, easy torque at low to middling engine speeds. Not much oomph up top, but perfect for in-town slicing and dicing.
Standard ABS, EBD, VSC, brake assist, and 6 airbags should make this the safest new car you can buy for $15K, assuming pricing stays around that point.
I'm also liking the sausage-shaped cluster of round gauges. Somehow reminds me of a '60s Alfa interior. Hopefully the driving position is less Italian--most small Toyotas have an awful arms-out, legs-scrunched posture with an annoyingly tilted steering wheel. If that's still the case, the new dash-mounted shifter will only make things worse.
Justin @ Feb 8th 2007 1:40PM
#10...idiotic comment of the day. Any car typically looks dated 5 - 10 years into a style cycle. Moron.
Anyway, this thing looks like garbage. Granted, i hated the original and this one certainly is no improvement. A rounded box on wheels is still a box on wheels. Though all the people commenting on the interior...if you've looked past the exterior then what do you know about auto attractiveness? tC is the only Scion worth a look.
Matt Self @ Feb 8th 2007 1:50PM
I think someone peed in Justin's coffee. Also my 7 year old BMW 7 series would like a word with you. ANYWAY it is my opinion that this thing is really really ugly. The previous edition was pretty cool for being a little box on wheels, this makes it look like a ccrappy quality big box on wheels, of which there are already a ton on the market. The Honda Element is cooler looking and probably more practical than this thing. Oh well, maybe it will look better in person.
bgdc @ Feb 8th 2007 1:55PM
Are those xenons? Swear those headlights look just like the xenons on my 330i.
RG @ Feb 8th 2007 2:11PM
Im a big fan of the first xB and at first i didnt like this, but it has grown on me. The one with the 19' wheels looks fantastic.
Bryan @ Feb 8th 2007 2:18PM
It's a sad day when someone lusts over a Scion lmao. What an ugly pos. At least they are consistent with the original....crap on wheels. And people complain about Ford showing concept cars in ugly colors..this one takes the cake!
